I did not come from wealth and privilege.
I came from a single-parent, low-income family.
While studying business in college, I took a personal finance course that inspired me to learn as much about the subject as possible. I started reading books like Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Susie Orman’s Road to Wealth. I learned all about what I should do to achieve a good financial position, but there was one major problem. What I should do and what I chose to do didn’t line up. For example, I knew I should have an emergency fund savings to cover three to six months of expenses, but did I ever actually save? No, there was always something more important for me to spend my money. Did I pay off my bad debt such as my credit cards? Yes, but then something would come up and I would have to rely on my credit cards again and the cycle would repeat itself.
I became frustrated with the fact that I knew all about personal finances, but I could never seem to reach my goals. I realized that the problem with all the personal finance books out there is that they are promoting a one-size fits all solution. The fact of the matter is, every person needs an individualized solution. You have to understand who you are, what is your money history, what are your spending and saving habits, and you have to be willing to get creative if you want to get results.
I did just that. I took a good, long, hard look in the mirror. I finally admitted to myself that I am a spender, not a saver. I accepted that my spending habits derive from my desire to overcompensate for all the things I never had while growing up. I made the decision to take control of my finances. I got creative and developed a plan, not a budget, to get myself and my family out of debt and into a better financial situation. My plan was not a quick fix with amazing overnight results. In fact, my plan is still in motion, constantly evolving as my family grows and my personal preferences change.
I am proud to say I no longer lose sleep at night worrying about my finances. I now have the freedom to pursue my passion and help others reach their financial goals.
